High School lessons
Abstract painting
What does a song look like? What sonic elements can you turn into visual representations? This lesson challenged students to think outside the box- mixing composition, color theory, and the history of abstraction to create some pretty neat gouache paintings!
Student work (Art 1):
These students had two weeks of work on these pieces- they listened to the same song over and over again while they were painting, and tried to capture the energy of their chosen song. From Conan Grey to Dave Matthews Band to Lil Baby, the students chose a vast range of music!
Student work (Intro to visual and performing arts):
This ESOL class ran differently: instead of having a planning sheet and a full two weeks to work, we listened to the same song as a class and students were challenged to paint to it for the entire time, and paint how the energy of the music felt.
Collage Photography:
Inspired by Brno Del Zou and David Hockney, students combined digital photography and editing with a classic 2D art form: collage. How does light and shadow impact your composition? What makes a good composition? How do you even take a self portrait photo???
Due to media restrictions at Portland High School, I am unable to show photos of students- including these self portrait projects.
